Most workplaces require the employee to be unimpaired while working and to establish this saliva is the ideal test medium. When determining if someone has drugs in their system at that moment, saliva drug testing offers significant advantages over blood, urine and hair sampling. Unlike urine and hair tests, which detect past drug use over a longer period, saliva testing identifies recent drug consumption, typically within the last few hours to a day, making it ideal for assessing current impairment. It is also far more practical and less invasive than blood sampling, which requires trained personnel and specialised equipment.
Saliva collection is quick, easy and can be done on-site without privacy concerns, reducing the risk of sample tampering or substitution. These benefits make it particularly useful for workplace safety, roadside testing and real-time drug impairment assessments.

Ideal application
Saliva Detects drug consumption almost immediately (within minutes) and lasts up to 24-48 hours. Detects impairment at the time of testing rather than historic drug use. Simple, non-invasive. Does not require medical training, results in minutes. Detects drugs in the system at the time of testing, not historic drug usage weeks or months ago. Workplace testing for current impairment, ideal for random and targeted testing.
Chosen most often by companies.Blood Detects drug consumption almost immediately (within minutes) and lasts up to 24-48 hours. Detects impairment at the time of testing Requires medical training, invasive, not practical for workplace testing. Results require lab analysis. Hospital or medical use, point of care. Urine Detects drugs from a few hours after use and lasts up to several days or weeks. Can be performed without medical training Detects historical drug use, not current impairment. Sample provision cannot be supervised, prone to tampering as a result. Potentially messy and pathogen risk. Testing for drug usage in the recent past. Hair Detects drug use from about a week after consumption and can trace back up to 90 days or more. Can be performed without medical training Sample must to given to a lab for analysis, result come back days later. Detects historical drug use, not current impairment. Testing for drug usage weeks or months ago. How to perform the drug test:
- Open the packaging, remove the cap from the tester and wipe the swab collector around the mouth and cheeks.
- The donor will then retain the swab in the mouth while saliva soaks into the tester. After 1-2 minutes you will see the saliva enter the test windows with a colour change. You can then remove the tester from the donor’s mouth.
- After 3-5 minutes the test lines will populate. A missing line in the test window indicates the presence of a drug in the sample, each line location refers to the relevant substance detected.
